The American Cinematheque Presents an Evening With Sofia Coppola In Person

The American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica has added a double feature on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, with a special guest - Sofia Coppola, director of the upcoming film, THE BLING RING. The evening will consist of a double feature of Coppola's 2003 film LOST IN TRANSLATION starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson as travelers in Tokyo and her feature film directorial debut THE VIRGIN SUICIDES with Kirsten Dunst.

Sofia Coppola will appear in person at the Aero.
With five very diverse features to her credit, Sofia Coppola is among the most fascinating filmmakers working today. The daughter of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, she got an early start in the movies as an actress, but soon gravitated to the other side of the camera. As a writer-producer-director, Sofia Coppola has explored such themes as youth, glamour and loneliness with both sensitivity and visual flair.

The remarkably assured THE VIRGIN SUICIDES demonstrated Coppola's rapport with both veteran and younger performers, a skill put to even more impressive use in LOST IN TRANSLATION, for which she became the first American woman nominated for a Best Director Academy Award. The director reteamed with star Kirsten Dunst for the dazzling MARIE ANTOINETTE (2006), a film energized by Coppola's love of fashion, Paris and alternative rock, while SOMEWHERE (2010) casts a knowing eye on the high life of Hollywood. Based on actual events, the upcoming THE BLING RING follows a group of young burglars (including Emma Watson) who target the rich and famous.

The double feature begins at 7:30 PM. The discussion with Sofia Coppola is between films.

The films screening include:
LOST IN TRANSLATION
2003, Focus Features, 105 min, USA, Japan, Dir: Sofia Coppola
Two Americans cross paths one night in a luxury hotel bar in Tokyo. Bob (Bill Murray, never better) is a movie star shooting a whiskey commercial, while Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is a young woman tagging along with her workaholic photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi). This chance meeting soon becomes a surprising friendship. A box office hit, LOST IN TRANSLATION was nominated for four Oscars, earning one for director Sofia Coppola's Best Original Screenplay.

THE VIRGIN SUICIDES
1999, Paramount, 97 min, USA, Dir: Sofia Coppola
For her feature directorial debut, Sofia Coppola adapted the Jeffrey Eugenides novel of adolescent repression and rebellion in an upper-class Detroit suburb in the 1970s. A group of local boys are mesmerized by the mysterious Lisbon sisters, who are kept on a short leash by overprotective parents James Woods and Kathleen Turner. When one of the girls (Kirsten Dunst) strikes up a relationship with one of the guys (Josh Hartnett), it sets in motion a chain of events that ends in tragedy.

The Aero Theatre is located at 1328 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90403. Tickets are on sale at the box office or on fandango.com

Film Noir with an Exotic Tiki Flair at 2013 Tiki Night at the Egyptian Theatre

The exoticism of the South Seas blows through Hollywood with the Cinematheque's annual Tiki Night at the Egyptian Theatre on June 1, 2013, starting at 5:00 PM! Join us in the courtyard for performances from King Kukulele & The Friki Tikis and the Polynesian Paradise Dancers, tiki vendors, and a no-host bar with your favorite Polynesian drinks. A slide show and a 50th Anniversary tribute to the Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room by Bob Baker's Marionettes will precede a screening of the 1954 film noir HELL'S HALF ACRE, filmed in Honolulu. Grab a lei and a Hawaiian shirt and come on down for some Tiki-tainment!

Vendors will be in the courtyard from 1:00 PM.

HELL’S HALF ACRE

1954, Republic (Kit Parker), 91 min, USA, Dir: John Auer

Filmed in the notorious red light district of Honolulu, this Auer/Fisher concoction is a delirious excursion into low-life noir. Evelyn Keyes becomes a taxi dancer to hunt for her missing G.I. husband Wendell Corey, who she believes is alive and writing hit songs in Hawaii! Little does she know he’s more than a simple songsmith - he’s also a gangster vying with Philip Ahn for control of the island’s vice rackets. Toss the sultry and statuesque Marie Windsor into the mix, and it’s pulp nirvana. Imagine film noir with a slack-key guitar soundtrack ... as good as trashy B-movies get!

Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90028.

About The Cinematheque Jean Marie Boursicot

The Cinematheque Jean Marie Boursicot is the biggest and only film library in the world dedicated to TV and cinema commercials. At first, Jean Marie Boursicot only intended his cinematheque to serve as a resource for students of advertising, so he mainly approached business schools and professional training organizations. Wellreceived by the advertising community and supported by the major agencies, the Jean Marie Boursicot Cinematheque gradually expanded its activities. Jean Marie nevertheless soon realized that without public or private subsidies, he would have to find new financial resources to ensure the preservation of advertising archives and guarantee the Cinematheque's survival and independence.

In 1981, he therefore created the very first "Nuit des Publivores®" (in English: "The Night of the Ad Eaters"), called "Friandises", with two aims: to share his passion and collect the funds necessary for the care and restoration of old films. In short, the "Night of the Ad Eaters®" became advertising and advertising became the show. The cinema-crazy little boy had become the "guardian of the temple" and the "memory" of the ephemeral world of fashion and creativity.
Established in Switzerland since 2005, for insurance and copyright reasons, the "Jean Marie Boursicot Cinematheque" is now internationally recognized as the greatest existing museum in the global advertising-film sector.
